Course Outline
This course is a nationally accredited one day course and is accepted in the mining, construction, gas, and other main stream industries throughout Australia.
The course is compliant with Australian and New Zealand Standards for Working in Drug and Alcohol AS/NZS 4308:2008, 4760:2019 and covers the following areas:
- Follow, implement & contribute to safe work practices in the workplace
- Confirm collection requirements
- Prepare for collection procedure
- Collect specimen
- Prepare specimen for pathology
- Oral and urine testing
- Alcohol testing
- Record-keeping including chain of custody
Face to face classroom delivery will be used to facilitate underpinning knowledge and practical requirements .
Assessment
Theory & practical assessments will be conducted throughout the course.
On successful completion participants receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.

Legislation / Compliance
Collect specimens for drugs of abuse testing is a nationally recognised training course accredited under the Australian Qualification Framework & conducted in line with Australian Standards:
- AS 4760-2019 Procedures for specimen collection & the detection and quantitation of drugs in oral fluids
- AS NZS 4308-2008 Procedures for specimen collection & the detection and quantitation of drugs of abuse in urine
Recognition of Prior Learning
There are provisions for RPL within the context of this training course. Please ask our administrator.
Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)
No qualifications or other formal pre-requisites are necessary to participate in this course however:
To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication. Examples of LLN requirements participants will need to perform include:
- Interpret organisational policy & procedure for Alcohol & other drug testing
- Identify & select appropriate testing type
- Ensure equipment is calibrated & usable
- Understand selection process
- Convey processes & consequences of screening
- Record medications that can affect testing results
- Accurately interpret & record results
- Prepare chain of custody
- Correct storage of non-negative specimens
- Report outcomes of alcohol & other drug testing on prescribed organisation forms.
