Course Outline

This course consists of a cluster of units designed to prepare a worker to maintain a chainsaw and conduct basic operations, the precursor to falling trees and is Nationally Accredited course conducted over two days that provides the skills and knowledge required to maintain and service chainsaws including chain sharpening, power heads and cutting attachments. It is also intended to train you to cut trees that have already been felled.

The course is split equally between learning basic skills and preparing chainsaws for use and practical application to hone your skills cutting felled trees in a work environment.

Day One

Will consist of face to face classroom delivery learning techniques to maintain a chainsaw and fundamentals underpinning  knowledge of basic chainsaw use.

Day Two

Begins at a workplace ready for practical application of the skills learned the day prior. The day will be spent cutting up trees that have already been felled and maintaining the chainsaw including re-sharpening the saw. Location of the practical application is within the local Gladstone area.

 

Assessment

Theory assessments will be conducted at the end of day one and practical assessments will be conducted at the end of day two.

Personnel deemed not yet competent will be given an opportunity to join another course session.

On successful completion participants receive a Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment.

 

Who Should Attend?

Persons who would like to learn safe use and maintenance of a chainsaw to cut up tree branches of a felled tree such as conducting area maintenance.

  • Qld WHS Act and Regulations

 

Recognition of Prior Learning

There are provisions for recognition of prior learning for the training.

 

Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)

To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication. Examples of activities that participants will need to perform include:

  • Interpret workplace health and safety procedures
  • Interpret manufacturer’s instructions and maintenance recommendations
  • Calculate ratios and measure quantities of oils and fuels
  • Complete basic accurate records
  • Plan cutting patterns and sequences
  • Complete routine calculations and report on size, length and diameter of cut trees
  • Efficiently and logically sequence the stages of preparation for and cutting of trees using work order to guide activities
