Course Outline

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to remove non-friable asbestos containing material (ACM).

It includes preparing, containing & removing non-friable ACM & underpinning knowledge of decontamination & disposal requirements.

There will be some face to face classroom delivery used to facilitate underpinning knowledge requirements but a large portion of the training and assessment will be doing activities.

Practical assessment activities will ensure sound performance with the competency standards & industry requirements.

 

Assessment

Assessments will be conducted during the course with the  practical component making up a large portion of the assessment. Theory assessment will be completed at the end of the training session.

Participants who successfully complete the training & assessment will receive a Nationally  Recognised Statement of Attainment.

 

Who Should Attend?

This training applies to people who work in the construction industry & may be either domestic or commercial, a demolition site, a new work site or an existing structure being renovated, extended, restored or maintained. Project sites may be construction sites & may also include ships, contaminated soils and fences in relation to the non-friable asbestos removal process.

Legislation / Compliance

Asbestos is managed & controlled in Queensland by 10 main statutes and two codes of practice. These are administered by state government agencies and local councils.

Work health & safety legislation regulates the management, control & removal of asbestos in the workplace (including residential premises which are a ‘workplace’ when work is undertaken by a contractor).

Public health legislation applies to asbestos-related activities carried out at non-workplaces settings (i.e. by home owners at domestic premises).

Environmental protection & waste legislation regulates the transportation of commercial & industrial waste, the licensing of disposal facilities (such as landfills) & notification and remediation of contaminated land.

 

Recognition of Prior Learning

There are no provisions for recognition of prior learning for the training.

 

Language Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)

To complete this course successfully, participants need to have reasonably well developed skills in areas such as reading, writing and communication.

Examples of activities that participants will need to perform include:

  • Writing, interpreting & facilitating risk assessment processes
  • Interpreting safe work method statements for the removal of non-friable asbestos
  • Understanding the purpose & application of documentation for notification & the use of an asbestos removal control plan (ARCP) & clearance inspections
